Cambridge City Council launches a survey to gain insight on trees in gardens

As part of the ‘Cambridge Canopy Project’, the City Council has launched a city survey for residents to gain insight into perceptions relating to trees in gardens.

There are more than 300,000 trees in Cambridge, and by far the greatest proportion (74%) of these are privately-owned in household gardens and on other institutional land. The greatest land area in the city also is made up of private ownership (77%). There are more than 40,000 houses with gardens in Cambridge, so if each of these households planted a single new tree in their garden, through this collectively effort, the total number of trees in the city could be increased by more than 10%. This would surpass the Cambridge Canopy Project’s aim to increase canopy cover by 2% by 2050 and would have hugely positive impacts in terms of developing a more climate-resilient city.
