New Publication: An Examination of the Financing Options Available to Local Authorities to Fund Urban Greening Programmes

The latest report of the Nature Smart Cities project provides an overview of finance options to deliver urban greening projects.

Despite its proven benefits, and a globally recognised need to enhance the sustainability of urban environments, the burden of investment in green infrastructure has often fallen to the public sector, especially municipal and local government. Alternative sources of funding for green infrastructure are needed. Such sources should move from a model based on capital-grant funding with on-costs for management and maintenance falling to the public purse, towards one that captures enough of the private benefits to encourage private sector investment.
